As this year’s spring commences, so do the new fashion trends or some might say previously loved fashion trends. When the sun hits, people’s inner American cowgirl appears.
Seen in previous years before, the ‘cowgirl’ aesthetic has taken over the spring/summer season. However, it feels that 2025 has brought it more alive than ever before. Cowboy culture comes from the wild west of the United States; specifically Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Arizona. The culture originated in the 19th century and has become a symbol of America.
Cowboy leather boots, denim skirts, paisley tops, chunky belts and fringe everything! Retailers have channelled a wild spring by bringing together these cowgirl pieces. In previous years we have seen the cowboy boot become popular among musicians, particularly in 2024, after the influence of fashion icons such as Beyonce and Taylor swift. Double denim has also been a recent trend with going out attire and casual wear.
On the catwalk, house brands such as Ralph Lauren and Hermes have taken influence with western fashion. Ralph Lauren gave complete western style at the spring/summer 2025 show, with a modern and wearable style.
EGO is a brand that has jumped on the western trend with their new ‘Desert Frequencies’ collection, where they have a variety of cow print accessories and western cowboy boots. However, the cowgirl look can be a hard aesthetic to grasp as the western fashion has been used for costume wear and can be easily seen as tacky. Another brand embodying their western designs is OhPolly, their ‘Boheme: The Festival Drop’ collection features flared trousers, long skirts, with colours such as tan and khaki.
But why is western fashion making a comeback for 2025 spring?
Since 2024, the cowgirl scene has grew drastically on social media and television. In the summer of 2024, Netflix brought out the documentary surrounding the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which created TikTok trends and influenced fashion. The documentary showed the beauty of western fashion and life-style. Music can also be influential for trends in fashion, Chappell Roan (the midwest princess), whose music incorporates her western roots, wears cowgirl attire on occasions whilst performing. Her fan base would be influenced by the cowgirl fashion.
Celebrities can also influence trends. Oh Pollys ‘Boheme: The Festival Drop’ collection was collaborated with British ex-love islander, Maura Higgins, who also met the Dallas cowboy cheerleaders for the occasion.
The cowgirl trend can be a perfect style for summer and the hot weather. Festival culture is also a perfect place to put on a pair of western cowboy boots and paisley top, people tend to experiment with festival wear and the cowgirl scene usually makes an appearance in festivals such as Coachella or even British festivals like Glastonbury. We will definitely see this trend grow and transform as we get deeper into the summer months.
