Tartan Trend: Back For 2014?
Paige Mooney tells us about the on-going tartan trend and how it's definitely here to stay.
When people think of tartan they usually associate it with the 90s punk rocker trend; the mohawks, piercings, Dr Martens, and red and black checkers. Now the checker print is back for the foreseeable future and is sure to be an on-going trend for 2014.
Tartan is hitting the high street stores all over the North East this Winter after being shown on the catwalk for A/W13.Designers such as Celine, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc by Marc Jacobs, all have shown tartan pieces throughout their collections from oversized coats, accessories and two-piece suits.
Stylist Julie Hannah said: “With so many colours and fabrics, there’s a tartan to go with any outfit and for any season.” Right now high street stores are stocking skater skirts, dresses, or for a more sophisticated look, tailored trousers and blazers.
If the idea of the punk-rock tartan trend intimidates you, why not incorporate it into your outfit by wearing a tartan scarf, bag or shoes?
The print comes in various materials from silk, chiffon, wool, denim and tweed. If you are not a fan of the traditional red and black, don’t fret, there are plenty more colours to choose from.
One colour combo we love at the moment is the navy and dark green, seen on The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton who has shown us how to achieve a more feminine look while still following the trend.
Celebrities such as Rita Ora, Rihanna and Cara Delevingne have recently been snapped wearing the trend. Rita Ora has been seen sporting tartan so much lately that it may be becoming part of her stand-out signature look.
Fashion Journalism student, Kenza Jamil, 19, said: “Today I’m wearing tartan trousers with a black leather/cotton t-shirt, black leather jacket and black buckled boots. I wanted to stick with the more punky tartan trend.”
